Zoe: Grandma, what’s this? It says „Do not throw away” in big letters.
Helen: Oh my goodness. I haven’t seen that box for twenty years. Bring it here, darling. Let’s open it.
Zoe: A ticket… „The Beach Boys, 1972”. Wait — you went to a real concert?
Helen: I did! I queued for six hours to buy that ticket. And that’s where I met your grandfather. He stood on my foot in the crowd and spent the whole evening apologising.
Zoe: That’s so cute! And this? Is this… a cassette?
Helen: That’s a mixtape. We used to sit by the radio for hours with a finger on the „record” button, waiting for our favourite song. If the DJ started talking too early, you had to start again.
Zoe: That sounds exhausting. I just press play.
Helen: Yes, but when you finally got the song, you really loved it. Now — oh, look. A train ticket. That’s the train that took me to the city for my very first job. I was eighteen and terrified. I’d never been away from home before.
Zoe: What was the job?
Helen: Typist in an insurance office. I typed letters all day on a machine that sounded like a train itself. Ah, and here’s my school report.
Zoe: (reading) „Helen is a bright girl but talks far too much in class.” Grandma!
Helen: Some things never change, darling. I’m still talking, aren’t I?
Zoe: And a photo of a dog with… a very big hat?
Helen: That’s Biscuit. Best dog in the world. My father made that hat for her for a fancy-dress competition. She won second prize.
Zoe: Grandma, I had no idea about any of this. You had such an exciting life. I always thought of you as… well, Grandma.
Helen: (laughs) Everyone was young once. That’s the secret old people keep in their shoeboxes.
Zoe: Can we record your stories? On my phone? I want to keep them — properly.
Helen: Only if you promise to listen to the long versions.
