Max: Mum. Mum. Mu-um. I have a proposal.
Clara: It’s eight o’clock on a Saturday, Max. Proposals start at ten.
Max: This one can’t wait. I want a Yes Day. Like in the film. One whole day when you say yes to everything.
Clara: Everything? Who gave you this idea?
Max: Netflix. And it’s a real thing. The parents in the film said yes and nobody died.
Clara: Very reassuring. All right — what’s on the list? I can see you’ve got a list.
Max: Number one: ice cream for breakfast.
Clara: How much ice cream are we talking about?
Max: A normal amount. A normal bucket.
Clara: A bowl. Yes. Next?
Max: A pillow fight in the living room. And I’m allowed to win.
Clara: You’re allowed to try. Yes. What’s number three?
Max: An alpaca.
Clara: An alpaca. A real one? Where would it sleep?
Max: In Dad’s office. He’s never there anyway.
Clara: New rule, Max: yes to everything within reason. Nothing dangerous, nothing very expensive, and nothing that eats hay.
Max: That’s not fair! OK… then a trip to the zoo to visit an alpaca.
Clara: Nice negotiating. Yes.
Max: And the last one is the best one. I want to play outside with no phone until the streetlights come on. Like you did. You always talk about it.
Clara: Oh, Max… When I was your age, we didn’t have Yes Days. Every day was an outside day. We lived in a block of flats, and our playground was the carpet-beating frame in the courtyard. We used to hang upside down on it like bats.
Max: What’s a carpet-beating frame?
Clara: Long story. We wore our house keys on a string round our necks, and we only had cartoons for ten minutes before bed. If my mum wanted me home, she’d just open the window and shout my name. The whole street knew when it was dinner time.
Max: No phone? How did you know what time it was?
Clara: When the streetlights came on, we ran home. And oranges were a treat — we’d get them at Christmas. Honestly, we had so little, but I don’t remember being bored. Ever.
Max: That sounds amazing. So… is that a yes?
Clara: That’s a yes. On one condition. Next Saturday, it’s my Yes Day.
Max: Wait — what’s on your list?
Clara: Number one: you tidy your room. Number two: you eat broccoli. Number three…
Max: Mum! That’s not a Yes Day, that’s a NO day!
Clara: Within reason, darling. Within reason. Now go and get the ice cream — a bowl, not a bucket.
