Mia: Nora. Nora. Did you know scientists can now edit genes? Like, cut and paste DNA?
Nora: I did know. It’s been in the news for about ten years, Mia.
Mia: Well, I’ve just found out, and I have plans. First of all — I wish I were taller. Five centimetres. That’s all I’m asking.
Nora: Would you be happier if you were taller?
Mia: Obviously. I’d reach the top shelf in the kitchen. I’d see over people at concerts. Life would be completely different.
Nora: You’d still be late for everything. Just… taller and late.
Mia: Fine. Then edit number two: I wish I only needed four hours of sleep. Imagine what I could do with all that extra time!
Nora: Watch more videos of cats falling off sofas?
Mia: …Possibly. But productively. Number three: I wish I could eat cake every day without gaining weight.
Nora: Now that one I’d actually sign up for.
Mia: See? And a photographic memory for exams. And — this is the big one — I wish mosquitoes couldn’t find me. Every summer they treat me like a buffet.
Nora: Mia, if I could edit one gene, do you know what I’d choose?
Mia: Something boring and sensible, I bet.
Nora: I’d give you an off switch. With a little remote control.
Mia: Very funny. No, seriously. What would you change?
Nora: Seriously? …My grandma had a genetic condition. She spent half her life in hospital. If I could change one thing, I’d make sure nobody in my family ever had to go through that again.
Mia: Oh. OK. That makes my cake wish sound a bit silly.
Nora: A bit. But that’s the good news — that’s exactly what scientists are working on first. Real diseases. The serious stuff. They’ve already treated people with blood disorders.
Mia: So no extra height for me, then?
Nora: Not this decade. But if they ever fix the mosquito problem, I’ll buy you a cake to celebrate.
Mia: Deal. And Nora? I wish I were as clever as you.
Nora: That, Mia, would need a lot of editing.
