Priya: Leo! Wow, your flat looks… futuristic. What’s all this?
Leo: It’s my new smart home. I’m a busy man, Priya. I bought these gadgets to save time on housework. Everything is automatic now.
Priya: Impressive. So how much time have you saved?
Leo: Well… it’s complicated. Let me show you. This is my smart speaker. I just tell it what I need. Speaker, add toilet paper to my shopping list.
Speaker: Ordering… forty-eight rolls of toilet paper.
Leo: No! Cancel! Cancel!
Speaker: Order confirmed. Thank you for shopping with us.
Priya: Ah. So that explains the tower of toilet paper behind the sofa.
Leo: That’s from last week. This will be the second tower.
Priya: Well, at least you’ll never run out. And what’s that little round thing?
Leo: That’s my robot vacuum. It cleans the floor while I’m at work. Very efficient.
Priya: Is that… a sock sticking out of it?
Leo: Yes. It eats my socks. It’s eaten five this month. I think it’s hungry.
Priya: Maybe it just doesn’t like your socks. They don’t even match, Leo — one blue, one with penguins.
Leo: That’s because of the sock app. I signed up for a „surprise sock subscription”. Every month they send me a new pair. This month: penguins.
Priya: And you can’t cancel it?
Leo: I tried. The „cancel” button is hidden somewhere on page twelve of the settings.
Priya: Classic. Anything else?
Leo: The smart lock. On Sunday I went out on the balcony to water my plants. The door locked automatically behind me. „For your safety.”
Priya: No! How long were you out there?
Leo: Two hours. My phone was inside. I had to shout to my neighbour, and she called my sister, who has a spare key.
Priya: So, let me get this straight. You bought all this to save time, and you’ve spent your week cancelling orders, looking for socks and sitting on your balcony.
Leo: When you say it like that, it doesn’t sound very convenient.
Priya: Here’s a revolutionary idea: an ordinary key, a broom and a shopping list on paper.
Leo: A broom? How very… twentieth century.
Speaker: I’m sorry, I didn’t understand. Did you say „order twenty brooms”?
Both: NO!
