Lena: Okay, Marcus. It’s Sunday. Our ethical shopping week is over. Show me what you bought.

Marcus: With pleasure. Number one: this water bottle. It says „100% planet-friendly”.

Lena: Nice. Where did you buy it?

Marcus: Online. It came from the other side of the world… wrapped in three layers of plastic. And a plastic bag. And bubble wrap.

Lena: So the planet-friendly bottle was not very friendly to the planet.

Marcus: I fell for it, okay? But wait — number two is better. My old brown shoes had a hole, so instead of buying new ones for eighty euros, I took them to a cobbler. Fifteen euros, and they look new!

Lena: Now that’s ethical. And smart.

Marcus: Number three: this leather jacket. Second-hand, from an online market. Thirty euros.

Lena: It smells a bit… old.

Marcus: It’s vintage. And guess what I found in the pocket? Fifty euros!

Lena: No way! So the jacket paid for itself — and you made twenty euros.

Marcus: Well… no. I sent the money back to the seller. It wasn’t mine.

Lena: Marcus, you are the most honest man in Europe. Okay, I’m impressed.

Marcus: Thank you. Now your turn. What are all those bags?

Lena: Ah. Yes. So… on Tuesday I went to buy fair-trade coffee. And I did! Look.

Marcus: Great. And the other bags?

Lena: Next to the coffee shop there was a shoe shop with a huge sign: „70% OFF — TODAY ONLY!”

Marcus: Oh no.

Lena: It was a bargain, Marcus! I bought four pairs. Normally they cost three hundred and twenty euros. I paid one hundred and twenty. So I saved two hundred euros!

Marcus: Lena, you didn’t save two hundred euros. You spent one hundred and twenty.

Lena: …When you say it like that, it sounds worse.

Marcus: Did you need four pairs of shoes?

Lena: I needed one. Maybe. The other three were… an impulse purchase. But one pair is made from recycled materials!

Marcus: So, final score: I fell for greenwashing, and you fell for a discount.

Lena: But you repaired your shoes and you gave fifty euros back. And I bought fair-trade coffee. That’s something.

Marcus: True. Shall we try again next week? This time with a shopping list and a budget.

Lena: Deal. And I’ll take three pairs of shoes back to the shop.

Marcus: Only three?

Lena: The recycled ones stay. They’re ethical.
