Nina: Tom… where are the sweets?

Tom: What sweets?

Nina: The Halloween sweets! For the kids! You were supposed to buy them on the way home.

Tom: Me? I thought you were buying them. You said, „I’ll take care of Halloween.”

Nina: I meant the pumpkin! I carved the pumpkin. Look at him. He’s beautiful.

Tom: He’s got one eye bigger than the other.

Nina: Don’t change the subject! There are fifty children on this street, and we’ve got… half a packet of crackers and a lemon.

Tom: OK, OK. Let’s call it even. We both forgot. Now — think. The shop’s closed. What do we do?

Nina: …We’re not home.

Tom: What?

Nina: Lights off, curtains closed, and we sneak down to the basement. Nobody’s home! There’s that old TV down there — we can watch a film.

Tom: Nina, you’re a genius. A slightly evil genius, but a genius.

Nina: (later) Right. The only DVD down here is… Night of the Crawling Shadows.

Tom: Perfect. Very Halloween. Press play. (pause) Did you hear that?

Nina: It’s the film.

Tom: The film is on pause, Nina.

Nina: (whispering) Scratching. Something is scratching at the basement door. The outside door.

Tom: And look — the little window. Shadows. Something’s crawling around the house.

Nina: Tom, did you lock the garden door?

Tom: I thought you locked it!

Nina: Oh, not again! Should I call the police?

Tom: And tell them what? „Help, we’re hiding from children in our own basement”? Wait — my phone. A message from Rosa next door. Read it, I can’t look.

Nina: (reading) „Hi, it’s Rosa! Same disaster here — Daniel thought I was buying the sweets, I thought he was. Saw your lights go off and guessed your plan. We haven’t got a basement, so we’re coming down to yours. Sorry if Pickle scratches the door, he’s excited. Please don’t call the police. P.S. We’ve got popcorn.”

Tom: Pickle. The monster is a sausage dog called Pickle.

Nina: Well… they’ve got popcorn. Open the door, Tom.

Tom: Fine. But this year, I’m writing „SWEETS” on the fridge. In capital letters. In October. Of next year.
