Diane: Well, Paul. Last box. We did it.
Paul: Twenty-five years in one house, and now… this. It’s so quiet. No kids, no stairs, no garden to mow.
Diane: That was the whole point. Four bedrooms for two people was silly. The kids are gone, the nest is empty, and we deserve a fresh start.
Paul: A fresh start, yes. A flat that’s smarter than me — I’m not so sure. Watch this. Lights, on! … Lights. ON. … Lights, please?
Diane: (laughing) You have to say the name first. „Home, turn on the living room lights.”
Paul: Home, turn on the living room lights. … Oh! Now it’s playing jazz. Why is it playing jazz?
Diane: Because you mumbled. Give it time. You’ll get used to it.
Paul: And the fridge sent me a message at work today. „You are running low on milk. I have ordered two litres.” Diane, the fridge is doing the shopping.
Diane: Isn’t it wonderful? Do you remember The Jetsons? I watched it every Saturday morning when I was a little girl — flying cars, video calls, and that robot maid, Rosie. I always wanted a Rosie.
Paul: Well, now you’ve got one. It’s under the sofa, eating my sock.
Diane: Rosie! Leave Paul’s sock alone! — Yes, I named the robot vacuum Rosie. Don’t look at me like that.
Paul: I’ll be honest, it’s clever. The heating comes on before we get home, the doorbell shows me who’s there on my phone… But it worries me a little. Who sees all this information? The fridge knows what we eat, the speaker hears what we say…
Diane: That’s fair. Let’s read the privacy settings together this weekend and switch off what we don’t need. Deal?
Paul: Deal. And maybe a normal light switch for emergencies.
Diane: (laughs) There is one, by the door. Paul… look at us. A video call with the kids tonight, a robot cleaning the floor, a fridge that shops. We’re not just empty nesters.
Paul: No?
Diane: No. We are the Jetsons now.
Paul: Then I want my flying car. Home, find me a flying car.
Diane: (laughing) I’m afraid that’s the next apartment.
