Margaret: Well, everyone, sit down before you fall down. Tea’s in the pot. And I have the final number… four thousand, two hundred pounds.

Tom: Four thousand two hundred! For a village of six hundred people? That’s incredible.

Margaret: It means the Carters can repair their roof before winter. When that storm took half of it in September, I saw Mrs Carter standing in the rain with the children, and I thought: not in our village. Not alone.

Aisha: Honestly, this morning I didn’t think we’d make a hundred. It was pouring with rain, and then the oven in the hall broke at eight o’clock!

Tom: (laughs) I’ve never seen so many people running down the street with cake tins. Half the village baked in their own kitchens and brought everything here. Forty cakes in two hours.

Daniel: That was the moment I realised what kind of place this is. And we were short of volunteers — I had three jobs at once. Car park, raffle and face-painting.

Aisha: Your tiger faces were… creative.

Daniel: They were supposed to be cats.

Margaret: I won’t lie, it’s hard. I’m seventy-two, and my back is telling me I’m seventy-two. Some years I think: this is the last one. But then I see something like today, and I’m signing up again.

Aisha: For me the hardest part was asking people for money. I’m quite shy. At first my voice was shaking. But by the afternoon I was telling everyone about the Carters, and people listened. I feel… braver. And I’ve made friends with people who are fifty years older than me!

Tom: „Tom, why do you do it every year?” That’s what my wife asks me. And I always say: when our barn burned down eight years ago, this whole village turned up the next morning. Nobody asked. They just came with tools and sandwiches. You can’t pay that back. You pay it forward.

Daniel: When I moved here last year, I didn’t know anyone. I felt like an outsider — the man from the city who doesn’t know which bin is for what. Today, three people invited me for dinner. I think I live here now. Properly.

Margaret: That’s the secret nobody tells you about helping. You think you’re giving something away. But you always get back more than you give.

Tom: Same time next year?

All: Same time next year.

Margaret: But next year — we’re buying a new oven.
