Kate: It’s so quiet. Lily’s at the cinema, Oscar’s at Max’s house… When did this happen, Adam? When did we become the boring parents who stay at home on a Friday?
Adam: About the same time they stopped wanting to be seen with us in public. Look what I found in the cupboard — the old album.
Kate: Oh no. Oh, look at Lily! That’s the day before your cousin’s wedding. Remember? She took the kitchen scissors and cut her own fringe.
Adam: Half a fringe. She got bored in the middle. In all the wedding photos she looks like a tiny rock star.
Kate: And here’s Oscar in the dinosaur costume. He wouldn’t take it off for — what was it, three months?
Adam: Three months. He wore it to the supermarket, to the dentist, to bed. The dentist asked him to open wide, and he roared.
Kate: And he „helped” you by washing your phone in the bath. With bubbles. Because it was „dirty”.
Adam: Best-cleaned phone in history. Never worked again. And Lily told the new neighbours I was a pirate.
Kate: Because you had that eye infection and wore a patch! Mrs Novak still calls you „the Captain”.
Adam: I’ve accepted it. Oh — and Lily singing „Let It Go” at full volume in that silent church.
Kate: The priest smiled, though. Everybody smiled. Except your mother.
Adam: …You know, sometimes I wish I hadn’t worked so much back then. All those evenings in the office. I missed so many bath times.
Kate: You were there for the important things. But I know what you mean. Now I wish Lily would talk to me more. I ask, „How was school?” and she says, „Fine.” One word. For three years.
Adam: And Oscar answers everything with a shrug. A very expressive shrug, but still.
Kate: They used to tell us everything. Every dream, every worm they found in the garden.
Adam: Maybe we just need to find a new way in. What if we plan a weekend away — the four of us, no phones?
Kate: No phones? They’ll think we’re kidnapping them.
Adam: We’ll go to the lake. Where Oscar fell in trying to catch a duck.
Kate: Deal. And Adam? Let’s take lots of photos this time. In ten years we’ll wish we had.
Adam: Agreed. But no bath for my phone.
