Sophie: You know what I love about Little Brookfield, Daniel? People here really care about each other.
Daniel: Absolutely. In the city we kept ourselves to ourselves. Three years in our flat and I never learned the name of the man next door.
Sophie: And here everyone lends a hand. Take Mr Harris. The moment our grass got long, he said, „Use my lawnmower, any time.”
Daniel: Lovely man. And his ladder is fantastic. Very stable.
Sophie: And Mrs Rossi! She fed the cat and the chickens every time we went away this summer.
Daniel: Three times, wasn’t it? Plus she collects all our parcels. Such a close-knit community.
Sophie: Oh, and Hans pulled our car out of the ditch with his tractor. Twice.
Daniel: And the Okafors let us keep the Christmas turkey in their freezer. And they lent us their trailer for the move.
Sophie: We’re just so lucky. … Daniel, when did you give Mr Harris his lawnmower back?
Daniel: Well… technically… it’s in our shed.
Sophie: Since when?
Daniel: Since April. With the ladder. But he hasn’t asked for them!
Sophie: He’s eighty-two, Daniel. He’s too polite to ask. And the trailer — didn’t it come back with a flat tyre?
Daniel: I meant to fix it. … And, er, Mrs Rossi has collected twenty-seven parcels for us this year. I counted. Most of them were your shoes.
Sophie: That’s not the point! … Hmm. The Wi-Fi we’re using — „Brookfield Guest” — that’s the Okafors’, isn’t it?
Daniel: The password was on a sticker on their router. I saw it when we were putting the turkey in.
Sophie: Daniel! Did we at least help at the village fête?
Daniel: We said we were busy. We were… having a barbecue. With Mr Harris’s charcoal.
Sophie: Oh no. We aren’t good neighbours at all. We take advantage of their good hearts. We just… impose on everybody.
Daniel: Right. Tomorrow I’m returning the lawnmower, fixing the trailer and buying Hans a very good bottle of wine.
Sophie: And I’m baking a cake for Mrs Rossi. And we’re going to the village meeting on Thursday. It’s time we returned the favour.
Daniel: Agreed. … Oh, a text from Mrs Rossi. „Could you feed my cat this weekend? The food is in the cupboard.”
Sophie: Of course! Finally something we can do for her. … Wait. Which cupboard?
Daniel: … Ours. We borrowed the cat food in August.
