Clare: Right, Martin. Ten days to go. Let’s go through the list. The tree?
Martin: Bought, delivered and standing. Slightly to the left, but standing.
Clare: Lovely. Fairy lights?
Martin: Fixed! It only took me three evenings and most of my patience.
Clare: Cards — written and posted yesterday. Windows — cleaned. Presents?
Martin: Bought… but not wrapped. That’s a job for the weekend.
Clare: Fine. This is going really well. So, last thing: the shopping and the cooking.
Martin: Ah. Yes. Well, we could do what we did last year and share it out…
Clare: Last year? Martin, have you forgotten last year?
Martin: It was a good plan! Fair, organised… Emma was in charge of the turkey.
Clare: And on the twenty-third she rang to say her flight from Lisbon was cancelled. The turkey was in her fridge — in Lisbon.
Martin: OK, but Jack was doing the Christmas pudding.
Clare: And his dog ate it. The whole thing. Then Aunt Ruth was making the potatoes and the stuffing…
Martin: …and she was sure it was next year she’d agreed to. She brought a box of chocolates instead. Half-eaten.
Clare: And cousin Leo, who promised the vegetables and the cranberry sauce?
Martin: He’d „started a new lifestyle” and wasn’t eating anything that week. He brought a bottle of water and a lot of advice.
Clare: So at four o’clock on Christmas Day, fifteen people were sitting at our table, and what did we eat?
Martin: Frozen pizza. Six of them, from the petrol station. The only shop that was open.
Clare: And to drink…
Martin: Dad’s homemade wine. The bottles he made in the basement in the eighties. 1987, I think. „A very good year,” he said.
Clare: It tasted like vinegar and old socks.
Martin: But you have to admit… everybody laughed. Your mum still talks about it.
Clare: That’s true. It was the funniest Christmas we’ve ever had. … But this year we’re doing the shopping ourselves. Everything. Today.
Martin: Agreed. And Clare? … Just in case… I’ll put a couple of pizzas in the freezer.
Clare: And I’ll hide your father’s wine.
