Rachel: Right, Simon. Shepherd’s pie. It’s easy. Just follow my instructions.
Simon: No problem. How hard can it be? You did it with two arms; I’m sure I can manage.
Rachel: Very funny. I broke this arm at a yoga class, remember — not in the kitchen. First, preheat the oven to two hundred degrees.
Simon: Done. Two hundred. Easy.
Rachel: Now peel the potatoes.
Simon: With what?
Rachel: With the peeler. Top drawer. … Simon, that’s the cheese grater. You’re grating the potatoes.
Simon: It’s working, though. Look — potato snow.
Rachel: Put them in water and let them simmer. Not boil — simmer. Now chop the onion.
Simon: Chopping… chopping… why is everything blurry? Oh, I’m crying.
Rachel: That’s normal. Now brown the mince in the pan.
Simon: Brown it? It’s already pinkish-brown. Do I need to paint it?
Rachel: Fry it, Simon! Until it changes colour. And season it — just a pinch of salt.
Simon: A pinch… what’s a pinch in grams? Never mind, I’ll just… oops.
Rachel: That’s not a pinch. That’s half the packet.
Simon: It’ll be very… tasty. Should the potatoes be making that noise?
Rachel: I said simmer! They’re boiling over! Turn it down! Now mash them.
Simon: They’re… mostly water now. It’s potato soup.
Rachel: And what’s that smell? Simon — the mince!
Simon: Well, it’s definitely brown now. Black, actually. … And there goes the smoke alarm.
Rachel: Open the window! … Simon, I love you. I really do. But if I give you one more instruction, one of us is going to say something we’ll regret.
Simon: So… for the sake of our marriage…?
Rachel: For the sake of our marriage, we’re ordering a takeaway. Indian. Chicken tikka masala.
Simon: A true British national dish! … I’ll get the phone. I’m very good at ordering.
