Mei: Excuse me — is this Speakers’ Corner? I thought it would be… bigger.
Frank: This is it, love. Not much to look at, but it’s the best free show in London. I’ve been coming every Sunday for thirty years.
Mei: Thirty years! So anyone can just stand up and speak?
Frank: Anyone. Bring a box, stand on it, and say what you think. People have done it here for well over a hundred years. George Orwell came to listen, you know. And William Morris spoke here.
Speaker 1: …and that is why, ladies and gentlemen, cats are far more intelligent than dogs!
Frank: (shouting) I beg to differ! My dog can open the fridge!
Speaker 1: Then your dog is a criminal, sir!
Mei: (laughing) Is that allowed? Shouting at the speaker?
Frank: That’s heckling. It’s half the fun. If you ask me, a good speaker needs good hecklers.
Mei: So can people say absolutely anything here?
Frank: That’s a popular myth. People think the law doesn’t apply here, but it does. You can talk about almost any subject, but you can’t break the law. The police only come if there’s a real problem.
Speaker 2: Friends! Cars are destroying our cities! I say: ban every car from central London — tomorrow!
Mei: Hmm. I’m on the fence about that one. Less pollution is good, but tomorrow? That’s a bit of a stretch.
Frank: You can say that again. My knees can’t cycle to Oxford Street.
Mei: You know, we have a Speakers’ Corner in Singapore too — in a park in the city centre. But it’s much quieter than this.
Frank: Quieter? Then you need some Londoners. We’ll come and heckle.
Mei: Frank, do you ever speak yourself?
Frank: Once a year, on my birthday. My topic is always the same: „Tea should be served without milk.”
Mei: Without milk? In England? Frank, I’m not buying it.
Frank: (laughs) We’ll have to agree to disagree. Now — what about you? Fancy a minute on the box?
Mei: Me? Oh… why not! (steps up) Hello, everyone! My name is Mei, and I believe… the best food in the world comes from Singapore!
Frank: Hear, hear! Prove it — bring samples next Sunday!
