Nina: So? Come on, Leo! Yesterday was Valentine’s Day. Did you do it? Did you pop the question?

Leo: Nina, sit down. You need to hear this from the beginning.

Nina: Oh no. That’s never a good start.

Leo: I had the perfect plan. Six weeks of planning. A path of rose petals in the park, a string quartet hiding behind the fountain, and the ring inside a pink cupcake from Clara’s favourite bakery. The signal for the musicians was simple: when I put on my red scarf, they start playing.

Nina: That’s actually beautiful. What went wrong?

Leo: Everything. First, I didn’t want her to guess, so I told her we were going to a boring dinner with my boss. So she came in her old tracksuit, with no make-up, in a terrible mood.

Nina: (laughing) Oh, Leo.

Leo: Then I put on the red scarf. Nothing. Silence. And thirty metres away, another guy — also in a red scarf — was tying his shoelace. And the quartet started playing… for him! His girlfriend screamed, everyone clapped, and the poor man had no idea what was happening.

Nina: No! And the cupcake?

Leo: I put the box on the bench for one second to wave at the musicians — and a pigeon flew down and knocked it into the fountain.

Nina: With the ring inside?!

Leo: With the ring inside. So there I was, in February, standing in a fountain in my best suit, fishing for a cupcake. Clara just stood there asking, „Is this some kind of team-building exercise for your boss?”

Nina: Did you find it?

Leo: I found it. Wet, cold, covered in pink icing. But by then I couldn’t do it. I just said, „Let’s go home.”

Nina: Oh, Leo. I’m so sorry.

Leo: Wait — there’s more. At home, we ordered pizza, sat on the sofa in our pyjamas, and she said, „You know, this is my favourite kind of evening.” And I just… took out the ring and asked her. No music, no petals, no pigeons.

Nina: And?

Leo: She said yes! Then she laughed for ten minutes about the fountain.

Nina: Congratulations! So what’s the lesson?

Leo: Love isn’t about the show. It’s about the person who laughs with you when the show goes wrong. Oh — and the other guy in the red scarf? Clara says we have to invite him to the wedding.
